It mainstreams gender as a component throughout the toolkit, and focuses on promoting greater understandings of how gender norms, roles, and inequalities affect HIV risk-related behaviors. This journal article uses the It’s All One curriculum by Population Council as an example for how critical it is for programs to incorporate gender norms and human rights into their approach. Field experiences from the curriculum are shared and suggestions that an empowerment and human rights approach is most effective in teaching young people about sexual health and HIV prevention.
